FAQ
The questions we get asked most. Anything else, send us an email or a DM.
What does "sub-only" actually mean on the day?
No points, no advantages, no judges' decision. A match is won by tap, verbal submission or ref stoppage. If time runs out with no submission, it goes straight to overtime.
How does EBI overtime work?
One competitor starts in a dominant position (back mount or the spiderweb) while the other's escape is timed. Roles swap. Whoever escapes faster, or gets a submission, wins. Still tied after that? We rerun overtime under the same rules until there's a winner.
Do I need a gi?
Only for the gi divisions. No-gi divisions just need a rashguard and grappling shorts or a singlet. Check the current kit rules on the Smoothcomp event page.
Is there a kids division?
Yes. Kids divisions run alongside the adult card, matched by age and experience. See the divisions on the rules page for the general breakdown.
How much is spectator entry?
$15 NZD on the door. Free entry for kids under 16.
How does the 5th edition and the golden ticket work?
Every edition, the Open Weight winner and the athlete with the best submission each earn a golden ticket. On the 5th edition, every golden ticket holder faces off against each other, and only golden ticket athletes can compete in it. It's a qualification path to one big night.
Where is it held?
We don't have a permanent home yet. The venue moves around Christchurch each edition, and every event page lists that edition's venue.
How do I register?
Registration, brackets, weigh-in windows and the day's schedule all run through Smoothcomp. Every event page links straight to its registration.
How often does the event run?
Follow our socials or check the events page for the next confirmed date.
